One very popular and long-standing way of running your own business is by taking over the reins of a well established family concern. Family businesses tend to be controlled by various members of the same family, and in many cases have been handed down from one generation to the next over a period of many years.

There are a lot of advantages to owning a family run business, as well as a number of issues that need to be considered so as to avoid conflict at home and at work. One of the advantages of being a part of a family run business is the fact that you and your family are more likely to share common values and a similar ethos on how to go about running the enterprise. It also means that everyone involved will feel a much stronger sense of commitment and responsibility to the business than an employee would normally feel toward a business where he or she is just another cog in the machine.

Family members are more likely to be willing to put in extra hours, and to appreciate the necessity when you are obliged to do the same. This can also be a help during tougher times ? family members being much more likely to accept lower or deferred wages from a family business than would any other employee. Loyalty can be a strong factor in business, and given that there are few bonds stronger than family loyalty, this can usually result in a very strong business.

Of course, it is not all sunshine and roses. Conflict will inevitably occur in the business at some point, and you need to know how to deal with it so that it does not end up causing serious damage to family relationships; likewise you need to be sure that family tensions do not impinge on work. One of the advantages of a family run business ? that sense of stability, and of knowing that you are providing for future generations of your family as well as your immediate one ? can be a double edged sword, as it can result in a feeling of complacency and reluctance to adapt to change.

When setting up a family business, shares need to be allocated, and the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved need to be clearly delineated from the very beginning. Good communication is often said to be a key factor in a successful business; it is even more vital to a family run organisation.

Open discussion is the best way to avoid some of the potential pitfalls when your family members are also your colleagues, employees and maybe even your boss. Emotional issues must be kept separate from business issues, and family members must all be aware of this from the beginning.

A family constitution is often a good idea to establish boundaries between home and work. A constitution is a general declaration of principles, to establish the goals of the business, and the way family members are expected to act in relation to the business.

If handled correctly, a family run business could be a highly successful venture that could last for generations to come.

One of the steps for getting out of debt is to reduce your expenditure, here we are going to look at the ways in which you can save money on your car bills.

You may find it an interesting and surprising exercise if you add up all of your car bills over the last year. Make sure you include the cost of your car loan, tax, MOT, insurance, servicing, petrol and depreciation of the cars value and you may realise just how much a car really costs.

Let’s begin by looking at ways you can reduce the current costs on your car:

Petrol Prices

As you may have noticed petrol prices vary from petrol station to petrol station, and a really good service for finding the best price in your area is available at petrolprices.com. Here you can enter your postcode and search for the cheapest petrol price within a certain distance. To get the most benefit from this you need to plan in advance your journeys and then when passing the cheapest garage, fill up with petrol. Otherwise you may find that making a special trip to a petrol station does not save you any money because of the extra miles you have had to travel.

Driving Economically

What is your current driving style? Do you race away from the lights as fast as you can and then slam on the brakes at the next set of lights? This can cost you a lot of money. Try driving more economically, try to set off at a steady pace and change gear at low revs, for instance in a petrol car change at 2500rpm and in a diesel car change at 2000rpm.

Leave more space between you and the car in front, this gives you more time to anticipate what is happening and instead of having to slam on your brakes, you can just ease off the accelerator.

This style of driving will save you petrol, as well as wear and tear on your tyres and brakes. If you have an on board computer in your car it can be useful to view the current miles per gallon (mpg) that you are achieving, by keeping an eye on the average mpg it will help to change your driving style and find the best method for getting the highest mpg as possible from your car.

Tyre Pressure and Excess Baggage

Make sure your tyres are fully inflated to the correct pressures, slightly flat tires lower your mpg and mean you will use more petrol. Also make sure you are not carrying around any excess weight in your boot, extra weight in the car also means a reduced average mpg.

Insurance

The next time your insurance is due for renewal on your car, do not accept the initial renewal price that your current insurance company gives. Once your current insurance company sends you a letter for a renewal, compare their price with other insurance companies online. You can use services such as GoCompare and MoneySupermarket to quickly compare quotes from 1000s of companies. Once you get an online quote, phone your current insurance company and ask them to improve on the quotes that you have just received online, your current insurance company will wish to keep your business and will usually match the price or better it.

If possible, pay for your insurance policy in one lump sum rather than opting for the usually more expensive monthly payment plan.

It is also worth thinking about ways of reducing your insurance premium and you can also ask your current insurance company of how you could reduce your current insurance costs. Typical ways to reduce your insurance premium are to store your car in a garage, have an approved alarm and tracker fitted, limit the number of miles that you will drive each year, take an advanced driving test, and in some cases you may find that if you have 0 years no claim bonus adding a second named experienced driver can also reduce your insurance premium. It is worth talking to your current insurance company for any tips that they may be able to provide.

Road Tax

The amount you pay in road tax is now based on the CO2 emissions of your car and the type of fuel used, so if you drive a gas guzzler you may find that you are paying a high price for your road tax. Driving a more economical car could save you over ?300 a year. To find out the road tax rates for various cars you can use this service at parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/

Servicing costs

It’s important to get your car regularly serviced at the required intervals. This will help your car to run as efficiently as possible and also reduce the likelihood of damage to your engine and expensive service costs.

Service costs can vary from garage to garage and this is where you need to shop around. You’ll find that a branded garage is more expensive than your backstreet garage, but even the same branded garages will compete against each other, it’s worth phoning several garages for a quote and stating the prices that other garages have quoted, you should find that they will match or better the quote.

Your Car the Right Car?

The type of car you drive can have a massive effect on the bills you receive for your car. For instance do you really need to be driving around in a BMW M3 or could you “get by” in a Toyota Prius or Vauxhall Corsa?

If you are trying to clear your debts, this is an important question. For example:

BMW M3

Insurance group = 20

CO2 Emissions = 295 g/km

Road Tax Band M = ?435 for 12 months

Fuel Consumption = 22 miles per gallon

Toyota Prius

Insurance group = 7

CO2 Emissions = 89 g/km

Road Tax Band A = ?0 for 12 months

Fuel Consumption = 72 miles per gallon

When you compare the running costs between these two cars the differences are massive, so it is also worth considering changing your car for a more economical and money friendly car. However, if you already have lots of debts, make sure you do not take any further loans out to change your car, this really needs to be a trade down to a different car rather than a trade up to a more expensive car. You need to add up all of the figures for running your car and make sure that changing your car really does save you money.

Sell Your Car

Your final alternative is to decide if you really need to have a car. If you only use a car once a month, it will be worth considering hiring out a cheap car, this can save you a lot of money in insurance, tax, and maintenance costs as you only pay for what you use. Other alternatives are to use public transport, bicycle, or use a cheaper form of transport such as a motorbike or moped.

Conclusion

In most cases a car is essential for everyday living, so to save as much money as possible, make sure that you keep notes on the running costs of your car and then using the methods outlined in this article to see if there are ways of reducing your current costs. This could save you hundreds if not thousands of pounds a year in car running costs.

The conversation that did not take place a few years ago went something like this:

?We need to build new products and partnerships which allow us to add a lot more value to existing sites just in case the housing market implodes and there is a reverberation throughout the global economy in all aspects of business and employment.?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is actually down 3% this year, masked by the 33% bounce since it hit the March lows. When people ask me how?s it going out there, my response goes something like this ? I feel today about the general economy like I did in January. I feel that way not because the Dow Jones is at a similar price as it was at the beginning for the year but because of what I hear from partners and customers. It is a tough piece of bread, as my Dad said often, for so many companies and people.

Businesses remain pessimistic about being able to borrow money, more people are losing jobs, and employed consumers are trying to hold on to their income at a greater rate. I feel blessed to have a job, especially at Radiant given our situation.

Our company is very fortunate. We invested a lot of our profits over the last five years to help grow our business. We focused R&D and acquisition efforts mostly on expanding into new geographies, industry segments and product lines. I cannot honestly say that if we knew of the impending recession that we would have made those investments. But I am incredibly thankful we did. The products and businesses we invested in have proven to be somewhat recession-proof.

Customers more than I?ve ever seen are more focused on existing operations. Site expansion is no longer the top priority for many of our customers and prospects. Their eyes have turned towards optimizing existing site performance. Products like Quest, Orderman, and Aloha Command Center ? just to name a few ? are more relevant than ever for helping customers improve their existing store operations.

I am extremely confident in Radiant?s future. It is humbling that so many of the decisions we made years ago are proving to be crucial to our success today. As we look to the future, we continue to challenge ourselves to provide tools to more customers looking to improve their performance. We have touched various parts of the operation in the industries we serve, but there are more ways to help. That is the predominant question we are asking ourselves ? how can we continue our success even when the given of site expansion no longer is?

—

Why in the World

Radiant?s global leadership team gets together every six months. Those are two of my favorite times of year. It is a chance to catch up in person with Radiant?s top 80 people who each bring a unique perspective to our company. The agenda is always ambitious and the one two weeks ago was no exception.

Of the many items on the agenda, two stood out for me. We ended Day 1 with a session called Why in the World from Around the World. We started this thought process last year when the bleakness of the economy was at the forefront of so many minds. As I was tracking the decline in sales figures late last year, it occurred to me that our salespeople were selling more than I would have guessed. So, the question we began asking ourselves was, ?Why in the world are customers in investing in POS right now??

I spoke with customers and partners around the world about this question and was pleasantly surprised at the depth and diversity of responses. My conclusion was that we could do well in a bleak economy given the reason people are buying systems. I thought it would be good to get our top leaders engaged in this question, and, during the last two leadership team meetings, we shared our results with each other during the session called Why in the World from Around the World. It lasted 45 minutes with our leaders raising their hands telling all these amazing stories about why companies are pulling out systems of our competitors and replacing them with Radiant?s.

I cannot re-create the passion and energy that comes from watching our leaders from Salzburg to Singapore to Southern California share with one another these stories of how our system is helping businesses profitably serve consumers in a way they believe is better than any of our competitors. Several of the reasons why customers are investing money in systems include enabling customers to sell on the Internet in a seamless way with their store operations, reliability of our system during peak times, speed of service which drives revenue increase, shrink reduction that?s unparalleled, and the amazing service provided by our partners while at the same time our competitors are cutting levels of service. Several people told me how inspired they got from the session and the 16 stories I heard did the same for me.

Next week, I will share with you the second agenda item that stood out for me.

If you would like to get involved in something that involves your personal career and you want something that is profitable and will last you a lifetime, then we highly recommend you looking into running a personal training business.

A virtual office is really cheap, and you cannot even fathom how cheap it is when you compare it to the offline version of the office. When you are looking at the offline office options, you first of all, would need to sign a lease, which would then tie you down for a minimum of 6 months, and looking at the property market and its condition today, you would see that the market is really one that is expensive, and although prices have started to slide down due to the economic recession, the prices are not really that affordable at all. Then the costs do not stop there.

When you get an office and sign a lease, you would then have to either, and in most cases, renovate and equip the office with the peripherals necessary to start up your business. As the fact that each business is quite different from the other, you also need to understand that when running your own business requires you to set up the office in such a way to reflect the nature of your business. Then there are other costs you need to consider which of course would be the normal stuff of electricity, paper, toner, photocopying, printing, internet, electricity, toiletries and such. In fact, the list would be lengthy and depending on the type of business you would be doing, lengthy enough for you to actually spend more money.

Then you have to consider the regular maintenance that you have to do to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Another thing is that even if you are running a small operation in which you are the primary director and competency manager, you still would need to hire support staff to at least watch over the office when you are not there and this runs in the basics of answering calls and faxing, handling the accounts and such.

As you can see, there are plenty of costs to consider, and all of these costs can be eliminated with the use of the virtual office. The other benefit of the virtual office is that you are able to reflect the makings and polish of a professional business and have a base of operations. The virtual office is a place where you can have an assistant and someone to answer all your faxes and file all your receivables that you will receive in the course of running your business. As you can see, there are plenty of benefits when considering how good it is when a virtual office is compared to the normal office.

There are plenty of options to consider when choosing one and there are a great many services online that you can look at. Just do your research and tailor your needs to the virtual office that you need. There are plenty of options and it is customisable, so no matter how small or intricate your business is, you will then be able to have something you can use for yourself.

Cut your business rental costs and use a Singapore Virtual Office instead. Sign up today at this shared office space or compare virtual office space plans.

It is easy to see the concept of entrepreneurialism as something which is left to other people to do, especially the city executives and the rich corporate high fliers. In truth, this couldn’t be a more inaccurate picture of the world of the entrepreneur.

The reality is that most entrepreneurs are ordinary people like us, with no extraordinary backing, no massive bank balance and no high flying city background. Perhaps it would be true to suggest that most people in that kind of position wouldn’t be prepared to risk their careers and their positions for the apparent gamble of starting their own business. It is often perceived as the case that entrepreneurs are gamblers, taking their own careers and gambling them on a whim.

This is another inaccurate misconception. Entrepreneurs tend to be amongst the most focused, well disciplined, cautious and well planned people in business. When the responsibility for your success lies wholly and entirely with you, the motivation to succeed, to get things right and to know where everything stands is much more tangible. Today there is no such thing as job security, and increasingly people are becoming disenchanted with uncertainty, and the feeling of being undervalued in a giant company which has lost sight of individualism.

It is these people that taste the benefits of entrepreneurialism, following their own personal dreams and ambitions, often with a wealth of planning and preparation, research and assessment. With a growing base of entrepreneurs online helping each other out in forums and discussion boards, for those considering taking the step into such a world, there is much knowledge and experience on offer, and many myths that can be dispelled.

One of the advantages of starting out on your own, running your own business, is that you have an amazing freedom of choice. You can, possibly for the first time in your life, actively pursue your own dreams and ambitions, enjoying spending time doing the things you enjoy, and in which you have a personal interest.

All too often in the normal world of office work and traditional nine to five jobs we enter a field that we may have some interest in, but after a period of time it becomes painfully obvious that it offers little in the way of personal enjoyment, or fulfillment. We lose the excitement and enthusiasm we had to begin with as we realize that we are valued very little, and that perhaps the management don’t even know our name, let alone value us for the job we are doing.

In the world of business each person is able to see every day that the work they are doing is not only making a difference to their customers, but also to the business as a whole, and to them personally too. This level of satisfaction often results in the entrepreneur being amongst the happiest individuals on the planet.

This is not to suggest that it is easy, and no one should consider launching their own business idea without a good deal of forethought and research. The beautify of having so much information at our fingertips today is that often this information is easy to access. There are many thousands of people who have already left their day jobs to pursue individual careers; entrepreneurs that are just like you and me. Their experiences and advice will prove invaluable in helping to dispel myths, debunk scams and answer those specific questions or concerns you may have, from how to file your tax returns to how to market your brand or carry out effective market research.

One of the common questions many people have is: what is the difference between someone who starts out working from home, following one of the many schemes or ideas available, and someone who can be said to be an entrepreneur? There is certainly a good deal of overlap between the two, but essentially the difference boils down to the fact that most entrepreneurs are following their own ideas, pursuing their own goals, and establishing their own business idea which fits in to their own unique talents and experience, rather than implementing an out of the box package deal assembled by someone else.

There are many work from home schemes which are sold as entrepreneur packages, but unless you’re creating your own image, your own stamp and following your own ambitions, this tends to be more of a franchise than anything else. But this is not to suggest that an entrepreneur has to do everything for him or herself. There are many books, publications, disks and websites with a wealth of information on starting a business to help those interested investigate the likely paths which can be pursued, and not only find answers to the questions that they have right from the start, but helps identify the questions that they hadn’t even thought of yet.
