9 Questions every IT student should ask before joining any training program3
It is not uncommon to hear complains from many students about the training centers or trainers after joining the course or after completing the course. Here are some of the complains we hear often
- Our trainer asked us to pay extra for training material which should be given free as part of the training program
- After completing the training, trainer is not responding to my email queries or phone calls
- Why should we buy software separately, I thought training institute supposed to give free
- They didn’t cover the topics I was expecting
To avoid these issues and to choose trainer wisely, you should ask following questions. Here each point can become itself a seperate topic but we can deeper in later blogs.
1. What Contents do you cover as part of this training program?
This is the most basic thing, you should have given the clear content list what the trainer is going to cover in the class. One better way for you to assess the quality and quantity of the content list is look for other training institutes curriculum and compare with them. For marketing, trainers may publish all the things in the world as part of the training program, but by explicitly asking them to send an email with content list, you can demand for the topics they promised.
2. Can I get a demo class or can I sit in one of your existing class for an hour?
The marketing lady at an institute may sound great, but how can you assess the quality of the trainer? Best way is ask for a demo class or more even better ask if you can sit in the existing class for an hour. This helps you to understand quality of the trainer in terms of the subject confidence, way of explaining and any language / accent issues. If the trainer is genuine and confident, he should be having any problem to give a demo class or to let you sit in his existing class.
3. What materials (Pdfs, Docs, videos, PPTs) do you provide as part of the courses?
It is common that during the class, some topics seems to be very clear and some topics needs some more practice outside the class. These materials will help you during the learning period for better practices and also for additional learning. You will also need these materials to refer them back to brush up concepts when you need to use them for interviews or for work.
4. Can you provide me contact details from your recent students for references?
Yes, get the list of recent students and call them. Get more information in terms of the quality and support during and after training period.
5. How long do you support after completing the training program?
It is pretty normal that during the training program, trainer has to support you. Most important thing is how long they will respond to your questions after the training program. I would say minimum one month, decent would be 3 months support.
6. How will you provide access to the training software or application?
Even thought proper answer depends on the type of the training, but you should get clear information on this. Some classroom trainings provide access to the software from the classroom only. With the splurge in the recent technologies and online meetings, most of the training program will allow you to access the systems / applications remotely. In these cases most important question is how long can you access the system / applications after the completion of the training program. In other cases you might be given a software copy to take it with you and install at your home pcs / laptop.
7. Will you offer any real time project experience?
To make a job change into the training you are considering, you must need to understand how these kind of jobs function in real time. Even thought each company may differ in its practices, but you should atleast get the most common practices of a real time projects. Trainers should be able to give you deeper details and even some documents to show you how the projects are at actual companies.
8. Will you help me for the interview preparation?
Many students take IT training programs to change their career into IT jobs or change their IT jobs into better ones. In either cases, the important thing is how can you prepare for the new job interviews. Even though you get training in particular area, preparing for interview involves starting from resume preparation, project scenarios and mock interviews.
9. Will you offer any placement services?
For students who are looking to enter into chosen IT program jobs, they may need help with the placements. Some training institutes offer both training and placement programs. This is altogether different topic, we can cover more details in later blogs.
