Using Accounting Software to Make Tax Preparation Easier
Business ManagementAdvertisment
One major concern for business owners, small business owners especially, is handling taxes properly. There is a huge amount of paperwork and forms that must be completed each quarter and submitted on time and the whole process is confusing and the source of much unneeded stress. Running a business is hard enough – there’s no reason why tracking accounting should be more difficult than necessary. One simple and effective way to circumvent this problem is to begin using a dedicated business accounting package which will help when tax time comes around by doing a lot of the leg work for you.
How does the software reduce your stress? Frankly, it’s not too important to know exactly how the software itself works, but suffice it to say that the software will compile all your data and generate the reports for you that you either spend time doing yourself or pay an accountant to do.
If you’re not using software to handle your business finances, you’re likely having to give a bunch of raw data to your accountant and pay a steep hourly fee while he/she sorts through it and finds the relevant information and prepared your tax forms. If you aren’t using an accountant, chances are you’re spending a lot of your own time doing this – time that you’d rather be spending growing your business or working on things that are more in your area of expertise.
Accounting software solves these problems for you. That is not to say that software will alleviate all the stress associated with preparing and submitting tax forms – unfortunately some of that will always exist. But, so long as you ensure that the data input to the software is input properly, the amount of time you spend preparing tax documents will be reduced dramatically…or the amount of money you spend on an accountant each year.
Features to Look for in Accounting Software
If you’ve decided that the investment in a dedicated accounting program will be worth it, you need to know what kind of features to look for as there are more products out there than you could possibly sort through. There are a number of accounting software comparisons that help make this process a bit easier, but be aware that it will require some time to do right. Obviously, tax reporting functionality should be near the top of your list, to save you both time and money down the road.
Beyond tax reporting capabilities, some software also comes with tax filing functions. Expect to pay more for this feature and consider if the time savings will be worth it. If you run a small business, this may not be the best way to spend your money as you’ll be able to quickly file your taxes with the help of the tax reports that the software can create. However, for larger companies, this is a great feature. Also be aware that some programs with tax filing functionality are more advanced than others. Again, accounting software reviews can be beneficial when deciding which is right for you.
Another great feature to look for is a payroll module that will track and manage payroll in a simple and easy to use interface. Beyond tracking payroll costs in real time, these modules help a lot when annual taxes must be processed as they will collect and create reports that contain all employee tax information.
Finally, if you plan to invest in accounting software but also plan to continue using an accountant, it is important that you speak with your accountant or CPA to see if they have a particular software package that they prefer. All the research and reading of accounting software comparisons won’t mean much if you opt for a software package that your accountant despises using, for whatever reasons. On the other hand, if you know an accountant or CPA that prefers a certain package (even if they don’t work for you), get more information from them to see what they prefer about certain packages over others.
By letting an accounting software package do the majority of the “heavy lifting” for you during tax time, you can both reduce your stress and workload as well as improve your accuracy.
